Beaver Habitat and Control in Massachusetts
Beavers are found throughout most of Massachusetts, but are much less common in the southeastern part of the state and are very rare on Cape Cod and absent from the islands.
Beavers typically live in small family groups consisting of a mating pair and offspring (kits) up to two years of age. At about the age of two the young beavers will move on to claim their own pond and territory.
Beavers favor habitats with shrubs, a variety of trees, and smaller brooks or streams that can be dammed to create beaver ponds. Unlike most animals, beavers are able to dramatically alter their habitat to meet their needs. By damming streams and forming shallow ponds, beavers create wetlands.
These wetlands provide a habitat for a tremendous diversity of plants, animals, insects and wildlife. These wetlands also play an important role in managing and filtering floodwater.
Beaver Damage
Beavers can cause flooding of property and heavy damage to trees. They are extremely hard working animals that continuously work on dams and lodges by chewing and gnawing through trees and stacking the wood to form and repair these structures.

- Living with beavers – People who learn to tolerate a certain amount of beaver activity on their property generally find that co-existing with beavers provides far more benefits than perceived harm. - Exclusion – Fencing and beaver proofing can provide long-term control, while preserving the beneficial aspects of beavers. This is the most effective way to protect trees and shrubs in certain areas of a property. Ultra Safe installs beaver and wildlife fencing throughout Massachusetts.
- Beaver Dam Removal – Dam breaching and removal is an immediate, but short-term solution to flooding problems caused by beaver. Cued by the sound of escaping water, beavers will usually rebuild the damaged dam quickly, sometimes overnight! Ultra Safe has custom beaver solutions to prevent beavers from stopping water flow.
- Water Level Device Installation – Beaver Pipes will maintain water levels behind beaver dams. By successfully installing an effective Water Level Control Device, beavers can be preserved and unwanted beaver flooding can be managed correctly.
- Trapping and removal – Beaver trapping can offer a solution to beaver problems when done by an experienced trapper. This is typically only a short-term control measure however, as new beavers are likely to move into the area. Beavers can be trapped during the open season (November 1-April 15) by our licensed trappers using permissible traps (i.e. box or cage-type traps). Ultra Safe views trapping as a last resort. We feel that other than trapping a particularly hard to handle beaver, most beaver conflicts can be solved using alternative control methods and beaver management solutions.
- Emergency Beaver Service – A special permit is needed to trap beavers with restricted traps (i.e. body-gripping traps, “Conibear” traps) and to trap beaver outside the regulated trapping season. Ultra Safe Pest can obtain these permits when needed.
